Exploring the Magic Of Portugal: Porto to Lisbon
June 2023
My journey through Portugal was nothing short of magical, with each city offering a unique blend of history, beauty, and unforgettable experiences. Our adventure began in Porto, a city that effortlessly exudes old-world charm. Walking through the streets, I couldn't help but marvel at how the Portuguese people have impeccably preserved the original exteriors of so many buildings. The sense of history was palpable, and it felt like stepping back in time.
Porto's rich historical tapestry was an absolute delight to explore. I learned about the lives of famous Portuguese kings and even discovered fascinating details about Christopher Columbus' origins. As i roamed the streets, I were drawn to Taylor's brother's vineyard, where one of Portugal's most famous exports, Port wine, is crafted. The sweet and delicious taste of this wine left a lasting impression, and I now understand why it enjoys worldwide acclaim.
Driving between Porto and Lisbon was a breathtaking experience. The coastline with its deep blue waters and impressive waves juxtaposed against the jaw-dropping mountains made every moment scenic and memorable.
Lisbon, known as Lisboa in Portuguese, is a stunning city with its gleaming white buildings set against the backdrop of the azure ocean. I found it fascinating how the roads were wider and the buildings more modern compared to Porto. This was a consequence of the devastating 9.0 earthquake that struck the city in 1755, leading to extensive reconstruction.
In Lisbon, there was an abundance of attractions to see and activities to enjoy. One of the highlights was visiting the Monastery of Jerónimos, a gothic masterpiece that left us in awe of its architectural brilliance.
The city's positive energy and the warmth of its people made me feel welcome and eager to delve deeper into its cultural riches. From the lively street markets to the charming neighborhoods, Lisbon had an enchanting charm that captivated my heart.
Throughout our journey, the friendliness and hospitality of the Portuguese people were evident. Whether savoring local delicacies or conversing with locals, I were greeted with warmth and genuine kindness.
Before bidding farewell to Portugal, I had the pleasure of visiting a cork farm. This eye-opening experience shed light on Portugal's significant role as the largest exporter of cork worldwide. Most commonly associated with wine corks, cork's versatility surprised us as I discovered its use in an array of products. The range of applications amazed us from stylish cork shoes and trendy bags to innovative cork fabric. The educational journey through the cork farm was both enlightening and enriching, providing me with a deeper appreciation for this remarkable material's sustainable and multifaceted nature.
As our adventure through Portugal came to an end, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had. Each city left its unique imprint on our memories, and I left with a newfound appreciation for Portugal's rich heritage, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted people. Portugal is a country that effortlessly combines the allure of its history with the vibrancy of its present, making it an exceptional destination for any traveler seeking a truly magical experience.
Always busy,
Sam
